Cancelled exercises shouldn’t mean cancelled readiness.
7, November 2026 – The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that “several” British Army exercises were fully or partially cancelled over the past financial year, after a written parliamentary answer from Armed Forces Minister Louise Sandher-Jones. The admission follows a Royal Tank Regiment live-fire exercise being called off in September, with Chief of the Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Richard Knighton warning that a funding shortfall is putting pressure on day to day training budgets ahead of next year’s Spending Review. Cases like this are where simulation using the AVRT system really comes into its own.
It’s a familiar problem. When live-fire ranges and exercise windows get cut, unit level repetitions go with them.
AVRT’s VR Military Training System is built to keep training moving when live ranges, ammunition stocks or exercise windows are not available. The free-roam, wireless platform needs no live ammunition and no ongoing calibration, so a squeeze on live-fire budgets does not automatically mean a gap in unit level repetitions.
Because the system is portable and scalable, section and platoon level scenarios can run on base rather than depending on a booked range or a deployed exercise, with full 3D, first person after action review to capture engagement accuracy and decision timing for every session.
For units facing exactly the kind of funding driven exercise cuts described above, that combination of accessibility and repeatable training capacity offers a way to protect readiness without waiting on next year’s settlement.
